If you have any appreciation for 20th-century U.S. history or the post-Woody Guthrie American folk tradition or mesmerizing and sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes piss-yourself-funny storytelling and you don't know the work of Utah Phillips, you're missing out. He's like Studs Terkel with a gee-tar. (Get a taste of his backstory at Wikipedia.) You can hear him on CD or by podcast--but sadly, not often in live performance, as this archetypal hobo "retired" from touring last fall due to his wavering health. His son Duncan, who seems have inherited some of his father's gift for language, keeps a moving blog of Utah's hospital stays and reminiscences. Appreciate this living treasures while he's still living and help yourself to a slice of "Moose Turd Pie."
