You hear that? You hear it? "Forced!" If you can't tell the difference between forcing and pouring...does this college have an anatomy class? If you can't tell the difference between forcing and pouring...
Former Attorney General John Ashcroft (another U. of C. law grad! How do you like them apples, David Brooks?) spoke at Knox College in Galesburg yesterday, and when the subject turned to torture . . . things got weird.
He's back in the news because of a report that several top government officials--Condi Rice, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powell, George Tenet, and Ashcroft--authorized specific interrogation techniques among themselves. At the time, Ashcroft seemed aware of the consequences: "Why are we talking about this in the White House? History will not judge this kindly."
Turns out he didn't have to wait for "history." Knox College students pressed him on the report and on torture generally, and . . . there's no other way to put it, Ashcroft completely lost his shit. A DailyKos diarist and Knox student has a full account, and dday at Hullabaloo looks into details about the UN Convention, the Senate reservations to it, and other "random legal facts" that got lost in the scrum. The Galesburg Register-Mail* has video. Seriously, read the whole thing, it's jaw-dropping. It makes Meet the Press look like Inside the Actors' Studio.
