The days of juggling a box supper and a drink while standing in the Lyric Opera lobby during intermission will soon be over--for some of us, anyway. The Lyric announced today that it's purchased 6,800 square feet of additional space in the Civic Opera House and will open two restaurants for ticketholders "around" Christmas.
One eatery will be on the ground floor (in an area formerly occupied by a bank), the other on the third floor. Lyric paid $1.8 million for the space, and has hired the architectural firm of Aumiller and Youngquist to design the restaurants. No word yet on who will do the food, except that it'll be outsourced. And you might still want to pack a Power Bar with the opera glasses: Lyric has 3,563 seats, but there'll only be 225 in the two restaurants combined.
