The future's arrived for UR Chicago sooner than its staff hoped it would. They got the word this week from copublishers Matt DuFour and Chess Hubbard that the free "lifestyles and entertainment" monthly, launched in 1997, will halt its print edition. DuFour and Hubbard run En Prise Entertainment, a small artist management and promotions company that bought UR Chicago a year and a half ago.
DuFour and Hubbard are calling it a "hiatus" for the print platform. DuFour told me, "Our September issue will hit the streets this weekend and will be our last print edition in 2008."
He added ominously: "We will continue to operate URchicago.com and our weekly newsletter for the time being."
The Web is where just about every print product wants to believe prosperity ultimately lies. But no one's found it there yet. The change is a retrenchment.
