La Madia begins its fall series of cooking classes/wine tastings with pizza making, taught by chef-owner Jonathan Fox. He’ll cover stretching artisanal dough and baking in wood-burning and conventional ovens and demonstrate recipes for a margherita and a wild mushroom pie. Houby Fest in Berwyn marks its 40th anniversary this year. The celebration of the Czech fall tradition of mushroom hunting (houby means “mushroom” in Czech) features potato pancakes and mushroom tamales from local restaurants, Czech beer, and cooking demos. Also: live music, dancing (polka and belly), a parade, carnival rides, and “artistic mushrooms” by local kids on display.
