Swing states

If the polls are anywhere close to the mark, the fate of the presidential election will come down to the voters in a handful of states. Barack Obama probably has to grab at least Ohio and/or Pennsylvania, something south of the Mason-Dixon line, or a couple of the prairie and mountain states; John McCain needs to win most, if not all, of what’s up for grabs.

The members of the Reader’s self-designated poll-watching/augury team (Ben Joravsky, Michael Miner, Whet Moser, and myself) have read all the signs and determined that Obama will probably win Illinois—and perhaps a few other swing states along the way. Which ones? On that point the gods haven’t spoken consistently to all of us ... or somebody's not hearing quite right. So here’s the breakdown as we each sense it. (At least one of us, by the way, is just hoping to be a little more accurate at this than at the weekend’s Big Ten football games.)

Are we getting it right? Does anyone see McCain winning Nevada? Does anyone think it will matter?
