...is the ballot. After the 2000 election disaster--it's possible that George W. Bush was president for eight years because of bad graphics design--Marcia Lausen of UIC volunteered on behalf of the professional design organization AIGA to redesign Cook County's ballots as part of AIGA's Design for Democracy project.
The NYT has a great interactive graphic about AIGA's work; earlier this year Chicago Magazine looked at the improvements for the Cook County ballot, and there's some useful advice to be had. Business Week has a podcast with Lausen, and she's also got a book.
