Dan Savage talks to mediabistro about the secrets to his succcess. He also points out some things the alternative press has going for it in this challenging economic climate:

People pile up in cities not because they don't like yards, but because they want to get laid. People want to be where other people are, and we've always advocated for good urban values.

He's got no compunctions about the havoc his advice might wreak in the lives of his readers:

If they followed just my advice -- and didn't think about it for five seconds or get a second and third opinion from someone who's not a substance-abusing jackass with an advice column at his disposal -- I don't feel the least bit guilty if they destroy their lives, because it's just a matter of time before something did.

And in this New York Times op-ed Savage discusses legislation that's got him even more concerned than anti-gay-marriage measures

Once “pro-family” groups start arguing that gay couples are unfit to raise children we might adopt, how long before they argue that we’re unfit to raise those we’ve already adopted?

He's got plenty of reason to worry about that
