A while back Chicago sound engineer Kris Poulin (who's done house sound at Lounge Ax and the Empty Bottle, among many other places, and whose recording credits include Watchers, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, and Coughs) managed to snap his Achilles tendon while kicking a soccer ball around on tour with Pinback. He had to have emergency surgery on the road, and then when he came back to town, he somehow tore it again.
Though Poulin does have some health insurance (certainly the exception in stories like this!), high copays and deductibles have nonetheless left him with a bill in the five figures. Some of his friends and collaborators have put together a benefit for him at the Empty Bottle on Wednesday, December 10. Stanley Ross opens, the Velcro Lewis Group plays second, Head of Skulls are third, and the headlining is a quartet of Jeremy Lemos (White/Light), Doug McCombs (Eleventh Dream Day, Tortoise, Brokeback), David Daniell (San Agustin, Rhys Chatham), and free-range improvising drummer Frank Rosaly. DJs Gwen Lemos and Frier Tuck fill in the gaps. There will also be a silent auction of items donated by local businesses and craftspeople; cover is $8.
