Mike Reed: A Chicagoan of the Year

In yesterday's Tribune drummer and music presenter Mike Reed was named a "Chicagoan of the Year" in the jazz category by Howard Reich. I don't think there's any doubt that he deserved it; I detailed plenty of the reasons why in a piece I wrote about Reed this past summer. His quintet Loose Assembly (pictured) will be performing at the Hungry Brain on January 18.

Tomorrow I'll post the final installment of my 40 favorite recordings of 2008. I've already thought of an album I forgot to include (cue slapping of forehead), so I'll compile another post down the line to catch any similar oversights that present themselves.

Today's playlist:

Todd Sickafoose, Tiny Resistors (Cryptogramophone)
Keak Da Sneak, Deified (Koch)
Uri Caine, The Othello Syndrome (Winter & Winter)
David Murray Black Saint Quartet, Live in Berlin (Jazzwerkstatt)
Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Lie Down in the Light (Drag City)
