The Goodman Theatre starts its O'Neill festival tonight with a notorious production of The Emperor Jones by New York's Wooster Group, in which the title character--an escaped black convict--is played by a white woman in blackface. The can of worms this opens up will be addressed by a panel discussion, also this evening, called "Performing Other: Constructing Race and Gender Onstage and Off." Participants include Northwestern University's E. Patrick Johnson, Romi Crawford of the School of the Art Institute, Teatro Luna founder Tanya Saracho, and performance artist Holly Hughes.
The panel happens Wed 1/7, 5:30 PM, Chicago Cultural Center, Claudia Cassidy Theater, 78 E. Washington. It's free but reservations are required. Call 312-443-3800.
