Blago's Still Got Game

Campaign contribution reports for the last six months of 2008 were due to the state board of elections Tuesday. There was good news and bad news for our distinguished Governor Rod Blagojevich.

The bad news is that he couldn't complete his filing because the dog ate his documents.

Just kidding. But that's close to the truth: the feds confiscated his files because of, you know, that thing.

Or as his lawyer, Anthony Jacob, explained it in his January 20 letter to the board of elections: "There may be information for the December 2008 [report] not in the possession and control of the [Friends of Blagojevich political] committee."

No kidding.

"This is because on December 9, 2008, the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation ("FBI") executed a search warrant on the campaign offices of the Committee during which time it confiscated many campaign documents."

Funny how stuff happens.

"Some of these documents may contain information that needed to be disclosed on the December 2008 [form]."

I'll bet it's the real good stuff, too.

"We have requested the confiscated information from the FBI, but have not been able to obtain the information prior to the reported deadline."

Keep us posted; we aren't going anywhere.

On the bright side, Blago did all right, considering all of his troubles. He brought in $705,352 in the last six months of 2008, according to what he was able to report. Not bad--though it's down from the $1,891,238 he brought in for the first six months of last year. He got it from little guys (a plumber on the northwest side contributed $1,000) and big guys (northwest-side state senator Jimmy DeLeo kicked in $5,000). He also received checks from the owner of a Dunkin Donuts ($2,500) and some union guys (the Southern Central Illinois Laborer's Political League donated $34,000).

He was even raising cash on December 8, the day before he got busted. So, you see, the guy's touch is still--oh, how does he put it?--freaking golden.
