ESS residencies: the economy takes a bite, but they carry on

Since 1999 Chicago's Experimental Sound Studio (pictured) has offered artist residencies to worthy applicants whose projects require a lot of sound work. Previous recipients include percussionist Michael Zerang with Redmoon founder Blair Thomas, double reedist Kyle Bruckmann, Metalux's Jenny Sheppard, filmmaker Deborah Stratman with sound artist Kevin Drumm, and vocalist Carol Genetti.

ESS has just announced details about the 2009 program, and our brutal economic circumstances have taken a toll. Three residencies are on offer to Chicago-area artists, each including 15 to 30 hours of studio time, but this year they aren't free rides. The residency will cover two-thirds of the $45 per hour studio rate, but recipients must pay the remaining $15. Details about the program can be found on the ESS Web site. The application deadline is April 3.
