Today, being the first day of spring (beginning precisely at 6:44 AM), is also Nowruz, or the Persian New Year, a day for visiting, eating, and exchanging good wishes. Like last year, the Rogers Park restaurant Massouleh is celebrating all weekend with a special of sabzi polo, green rice, colored and flavored with parsley, cilantro, dill, and fresh garlic, eaten with whitefish ($12.95).

Additionally, proprietress Goly Nassiri-Masouleh is preparing the traditional haft sin table--a symbolic display of seven items (among them apples, sumac, and vinegar) beginning with the letter s in Farsi and representing things such as love, health, wealth, purity, abundance.
