According to a press release issued yesterday by their publicist, Saint Louis rock band the Living Things spent SXSW burning dollars in "guerilla-style protests over the economy." Their tactics included inexplicably rushing the stage during a Thunderheist set, "accompanied by six homeless men (including a wounded war veteran)," where they "all proceeded to burn dollar bills to protest 'Wall Street's dirty ways.'"
Unfortunately, even the addition of the always credibility-enhancing homeless vet can't take the scent of bullshit off this publicity stunt. The band, which starred in a Just Cavalli ad campaign with Kate Moss last year, says in a statement that "through symbolism we can raise awareness together" (Jean Moreas silently spins in his grave). Given that there is nary a person in America (barring toddlers) unaware of the current financial crisis, I doubt the Living Things' videos of slack-faced drunkards incinerating ones will do much to help.
