Mike Reed's People, Places & Things, the quartet I recently chose as best jazz group in Chicago in the Reader's Best of Chicago issue, is finishing up a two-week European tour. This past Saturday, while waiting for a connecting train in the small town of Přerov, the band—which has two African-American members—found itself smack-dab in the middle of a neo-Nazi rally. After several harrowing hours, the band eventually departed without harm. Here's Reed's account of the incident; a video the band took "before things got crazy" is below.
