Popped over to check out new Wicker Park boutique Mulberry & Me (2019 W. Division, 773-952-7551) this weekend. Owner Jana Zacek, who moved here from New York, named it after her former street in Nolita. Like any good New Yorker, she likes neutrals--lots of black, white, gray, and cream--but the racks are also peppered with colorful pieces for spring and summer. "I try to buy in two categories," she says. "Fantastic basics and special items."
Seen and noted: simple straight skirts of gray and black jersey by Fighting Eel ($80), a one-shoulder purple silk dress with graphic architectural details by Objets Trouvés ($280), and an intriguing motorcycle-style jacket made of incongruously soft bamboo fabric by the Battalion ($280). Most pieces run between $100 and $300, with T-shirts starting at $39--definitely more affordable than most shops in Nolita.
Retail here is more affordable for the retailer too. "I could never have done this in New York," she says. Here, "I feel like a millionaire!" Nice to know someone still does.
