One of the few nice things about returning to hundreds of e-mails and other work, after missing the better part of the week with the flu, was coming across the motherload of midcentury melodramatic film stills. Specifically, from Masaki Kobayashi's ten-hour epic The Human Condition, which opens today at the Gene Siskel Film Center and which J.R. Jones considers a masterpiece. NY Mag's David Edelstein has some helpful notes: "More people get slapped in this movie than in any other, ever." Sold.
