The Internet is understandably loaded with sad obituaries for and heartfelt salutes to guitarist, songwriter, and singer Jay Bennett, who died in his sleep this past weekend in Urbana at age 45. Bob Mehr wrote frequently about both Wilco and Bennett during his stint as a Reader staff writer, and here are two of his best, most memorable pieces: the first focuses on Jeff Tweedy's past substance abuse, but also digs into Wilco's problems following the departures of Bennett and drummer Ken Coomer, and the second discusses Bennett's post-Wilco struggles and his solo music.
