I recently heard a story from a friend who used to work at an independent record store in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He says that back in the mid-90s or so Tool came to town on tour. The afternoon before their show, Maynard James Keenan came into the store where my friend was working, went directly to the Tool section, pulled out every bootleg Tool concert disc they had in stock, and walked out with them all. It seemed, according to my friend, to be a practiced maneuver.
There's not much point to that story, except maybe that Maynard James Keenan is sort of awesome and also sort of dickish at the same time, but he's coming to Chicago on June 5 and 6 for a couple of bottle-signing sessions at Whole Foods to promote his Arizona Stronghold Vineyard and I don't know when I'll have a better opportunity to relate it. He'll be at the 1550 N. Kingsbury location on the 5th from 4:30 until 7:30 PM and at the 1101 S. Canal store on the 6th from 2 to 5 PM. I dare you to bring a bootleg Tool CD for him to sign.
