Dubhe Carreño, an artist from Venezuela who opened the Dubhe Carreño Gallery in Pilsen in 2004 (it closed in June 2008), just announced that she'll reopen it September 3 at 118 N. Peoria. Whereas her first gallery was dedicated exclusively to ceramics, Carreño will include other media in the West Loop space. The "aesthetic will remain the same" and the focus will still be ceramics, she says, but she doesn't want to isolate ceramic artists by excluding other types of work.
The first show, "Skin," will feature work by local artist Thomas Schmidt, who also exhibited at the gallery's original location. His works in porcelain and on printed acetate "generate a dialogue between industrial manufacturing and natural processes." The show opens Friday 9/11 from 5 to 8 PM and continues through 11/7.
