World Music Festival: Chicago kicks off Friday, and a total of 60 artists will play 21 venues over the course of the next week. Many of the shows are free, including several this weekend; see our comprehensive festival guide for a complete schedule and reviews of every act by Reader critics.
On Saturday, Irish singer Cara Dillon plays Navy Pier at 1 PM, followed by eclectic folkie Guy Mendilow at 3 PM, "dhol 'n' brass" band Red Baraat at 6 PM, and Fool's Gold at 9 PM. Ghanaian dance troupe the Kusun Ensemble performs at Gale Community Park (1610 W. Howard) at 3 PM.
On Sunday, the Steve Gibons Gypsy Rhythm Project plays the Pritzker Pavilion (201 E. Randolph) at noon; toy piano innovator Phyllis Chen will be at the Chicago Cultural Center's Preston Bradley Hall at 3 PM. Hungarian art rockers Little Cow play Navy Pier at 1 PM, followed by the Chicago Afrobeat Project at 4 PM.
