Book Launch for Choreographer Maggie Kast

Maggie Kast is a familiar presence on Chicago's dance scene, a benign figure with tendrils of white hair and a beaming face. She's known for liturgical dance, but I had no idea of its relationship to her personal life until I learned about the new book she's written, The Crack Between the Worlds: A Dancer's Memoir of Loss, Faith and Family.

Raised in a nonreligious family, Kast became a Catholic in 1980, three years after her three-year-old daughter was killed in a family car accident. And that was not the first or last of her trials.A book excerpt on her Web site suggests that Kast, who received an MFA in fiction from the Vermont College of Fine Arts, is a wonderfully direct, vivid, and poetic writer. She begins a series of readings Thursday, September 24, 7:30 PM, at Women & Children First, 5233 N. Clark. Reception follows. Go to the site for information on other appearances.
