Bebe Neuwirth, cast as Morticia in the pre-Broadway run of the Addams Family at the Oriental Theatre, missed five performances last weekend. A spokesperson said she was out with tendinitis and is expected back tomorrow. Too much tango, perhaps, but she vanished just days after producers Stuart Oken
and Roy Furman announced
that director Jerry Zaks has been hired to revamp the show before it begins New York previews March 8.
Tribune critic Chris Jones had noted on opening night that Neuwirth didn't seem to be having fun. (Reader critic Tony Adler called it a "pastiche," but admired its grace and craft.)
Nathan Lane, carrying on as Gomez, Morticia's partner in ghoulish bliss, credited understudy Rachel de Benedet during bows on News Year's Eve with pulling off "the hardest thing in theater"—stepping in and giving a "flawless" performance.
