Based on my Twitter feed and conversations with friends, the most common reactions so far to the new video for Jay-Z's "On to the Next One" have been, "Has Jay-Z out-Matthew Barneyed Matthew Barney?" and "Please take me to the hospital because I think my brain just fell out." Of course, a mind more attuned to the ways of Freemasons and the Illuminati might see things differently.

Conspiracy-oriented site the Vigilant Citizen breaks down the video's Masonic/satanic imagery. Since this piece is coming from a site that also offers "The Esoteric Interpretation of the Black Eyed Peas' 'Meet Me Halfway'" and an article theorizing that Lady Gaga is an Illuminati operative intent on enslaving the world with mind control, it's best to take it with several large helpings of salt. That said, there do seem to be a number of instances of actual occult symbolism in the Jay-Z clip. Occam's razor favors the explanation that director Anthony Mandler slips occult references into his videos—like "On to the Next One" and "Run This Town"—either because he's personally fascinated with the occult or because he thinks it's an easy way to make music videos look cooler. Another explanation is that Jay-Z really is a member of the Illuminati and is working on some sort of world-domination scheme. I prefer the second explanation because it is more kickass.

Weirdly neither the Vigilant Citizen article nor an unrelated video that claims Hov is a Mason mentions the five-pointed formation of the lug nuts on the Jaguar's wheel featured prominently in a close-up. Everyone knows that Freemasons love pentagrams and Jags.
