Dallas Morning News, December 10, 1897. You know that hokey bit of business from old cartoons and older melodramas wherein the top-hatted blackguard with the handlebar mustachios ties the hero or heroine to the railway tracks? Well, that shit happened for real in the 19th-century.

Not just once or twice: quite a lot, actually. Genuine Victorian blackguards showed an enduring and serious commitment to tying people to railway tracks. More where this came from over in the "Tied to the Tracks" thread at The Hope Chest.
