Valentine’s Day: it gives the media an excuse to do segments on what to wear and pretty layouts of red-hued accessories and luxury objects.

But do people actually buy new clothes or red accessories for Valentine’s Day? I have noticed a trend within the last several years of people donning pink and red on the 14th. Possibly they're the same people who wear green on Saint Patrick's Day and orange and black on Halloween and Christmas sweaters on Christmas.

Giving jewelry or lingerie is better documented tradition. But you'd better hope your partner has good taste, lest you end up with some garish ready-for-my-beaver-shot getup.

I've been admiring the Pica cast bronze vintage letters at Gem for a while now, and I think they'd make a much more original VD gift than the ubiquitous floating heart. Use them to spell out initials, a nickname, or even L-O-V-E if you must.
