Wheeling [West Virginia] Register, September 21, 1880. It's a story so inflammatory that it burst the very bounds of grammar, syntax, and punctuation.

Illinois was among the northern states with laws against racially-mixed marriages, so that would have saved the Chase family the trouble of obtaining a divorce or annulment on behalf of their "insane" daughter. It would be interesting to know how she and Sam Monroe managed to get hitched in the first place, as any qualified official overseeing such a ceremony would have been doing so at great risk to his life and liberty.
