The Daily Inter Ocean, May 2, 1881. Here's an interesting snapshot of an underworld matriarchy. I like the way that Mrs. Weis's progressive sons all find professional shoplifters to wed. A marriage of equals in 1881! She must have raised them right.

A rogues' album, you may have guessed, is a book full of proto-mug shots, though reserved for seriously recidivist bad'uns.

Matthew Marks seems not to have been the most respected member of the Illinois bar, but it still seems pretty gratuitous to drag his daughter's attempted suicide into the story. For that matter, how cold is it to gloat in print over the impending death of somebody's aged mother, even if she was a major criminal mastermind?
