The Bluegrass Legends series continues this Saturday at Evanston's American Legion Hall with a concert by veteran bandleader, singer, and mandolinist Larry Stephenson. On his forthcoming album 20th Anniversary (Pinecastle), the Virginia native marks the start of his third decade as a leader, complementing his rock-solid combo with a roll call of hard-core bluegrass heavies, including Del McCoury, Ricky Skaggs, Dudley Connell, and Sonny Osborne. And of course he can get the job done just fine without a parade of all-star cameos, and he's proved it amply on recordings like Clinch Mountain Mystery (2003) and the all-gospel Thankful (2007).

Many bluegrass luminaries begin their careers by serving long apprenticeships with high-powered bandleaders, but Stephenson cut his teeth in two lesser-known outfits, then took charge of a group of his own in 1989. Since then he's remained exclusively with Pinecastle Records and made no effort to cross over to mainstream audiences or water down his music. His appealing voice is high pitched and effortlessly malleable, and he has such precise control over it that he can inject all sorts of different emotions in sudden, careful stabs of feeling. His band includes bassist Kyle Perkins, guitarist Kevin Richardson, banjoist Kenny Ingram, and fiddler Josh Green.
