New York Times, February 6, 1900. I was telling y'all the other day about the prevalence of acid attacks back in the day—especially facials. Occasionally the same effect was produced accidentally.

One sort of wonders what that fateful tumbler full of carbolic acid was doing on that nearby table. "Compelling many of those witnessing the incident to leave the house" is nicely understated.
