Yesterday the Chicago Fashion Incubator announced the names of the six local designers who will join the project for the next year—and that it will sponsor a pop-up shop featuring work by CFI participants from the last three years.

The CFI is intended to give emerging designers a leg up in the business: they're given access to office, production, and showroom space at Macy's on State Street and are required to attend a series of seminars and workshops during their year. The only new CFI designer whose name might already be known to casual observers of the scene is Christina Fan of C/Fan, whose silky, minimalist, body-skimming pieces for women were featured at Fashion Focus Chicago last fall.

As for the rest, some have more work available for viewing online than others, and the press release doesn't give much concrete information, but it's good to see some menswear in the mix. They are:

  • Menswear designer Donaldo Smith of Killian Gui

  • Jonnie Rettele of Nonnie Threads, who designs menswear-inspired separates for men and women

  • Leah Fagan of PELOTON, "well-crafted separates, innovative details that are casual, yet polished, and, most importantly, a fabulously comfortable fit"

  • Miriam Cecilia Carlson of M.C.C., women's evening wear that features "draped and manipulated fabric inspired by ideas and thoughts of life"

  • Stephanie Kuhr of Dottie’s Delights,"vintage-inspired lingerie and foundation wear"

Oddly for an initiative identified with Macy's, the pop-up shop will be located in the 900 Shops on Michigan Avenue from March 18 to April 18.
