Anyone who's followed the fortunes of some well-known designers knows that knowing how to make a pretty dress is only part of what it takes to succeed in fashion—maybe not even the biggest part. To prepare future entrepreneurs for the rest, the Apparel Industry Board, Inc., (AIBI) offers a educational series, "The Business of Fashion." It kicks off with a discussion with established local designers (the list hasn't been finalized yet) on March 31. The rest of the schedule is as follows:
April 1: "Credit & Legalities"
April 6: "Buying & Using Fabric"
April 7: "Pattern Makers"
April 13: "Contractors"
April 14: "Let's Sell It: Presenting Your Line"
April 20: "Let's Sell It: Avenues of Sales"
April 21: "Let's Sell It: You Are the Product"
They run from 6 to 8 PM (refreshments are offered at 5:30) at the Illinois Institute of Art, 350 N. Orleans. Individual sessions are $75 ($50 for AIBI members), and the whole block is $400 ($300 for members). Reserve a spot by calling 312-836-1041 or e-mailing email@example.com.
