I'm in Love With That Song

The Replacements song "Alex Chilton" helped birth several generations of Big Star fans and had a hand in turning Chilton from an obscure pop musician into something almost mystical, like the patron saint of obscure pop musicians. Over the weekend the New York Times ran an op-ed piece from former Replacements front man Paul Westerberg that paints a much more human portrait of Chilton as a regular dude who watched baseball and had concerns about the propriety of asking a woman to fuck in a tent. It's not only a touching account by a guy who was lucky enough to become friends with his idol, but also a reminder that Paul Westerberg should really write a book.
