Philadelphia Repository and Weekly Register, March 20, 1802. No way am I buying that ants-dried-in-smoke story. I could see that as a condiment, but never a staple. The "fat earth" story makes sense if the Otamaguas were unhurried cannibal epicures who'd developed a taste for adipocere. Maybe they had a technique for cultivating the stuff?
