When this year's Pulitzer Prizes were announced today, I was excited to see that the comparatively tiny (circulation 39,000) Bristol Herald Courier from my home region of southwestern Virginia took home the Public Service award for an extensive series about natural gas rights. I was even more excited to be reminded that the author, 27-year-old Daniel Gilbert, is a 2005 grad of the University of Chicago and a former news writer and editor at the Chicago Maroon, where I worked from 2001-2003. Here's a list of his Maroon stories (h/t fellow former editor @laurao).

In other local Pulitzer news, the Washington Post's dance critic, Sarah Kaufman, won for criticism; she's a Daily Herald vet (h/t @StevenKJohnson). Raquel Rutledge of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel won for local reporting.
