If you're looking for a sneak preview of the years of litigation that will likely follow the BP disaster, Joe Berlinger's Crude, screening this evening at Facets as part of the Human Rights Watch Film Festival, is a good bet. Berlinger (the director of Metallica: Some Kind of Monster followed Aguinda v. Texaco, the Jarndyce v. Jarndyce of environmental disaster law, for three years—a case that began in 1993 and remains ongoing.

If you want a sneak preview of the movie, the great reporter William Langewiesche covered the case in 2007:

Instead of funding an independent, peer-reviewed epidemiological study in order to seek new knowledge, Chevron has publicized or funded critiques of the few such studies that have actually been conducted, in an attempt to discredit them.

Meanwhile, on the Gulf, BP is proving itself adept at containing the PR spill; not as much with the spill itself.

Update: As bad as it is in the Gulf, it's much worse in Nigeria (h/t Beachwood Reporter). Now's also a good time to read up on Ixtoc 1.
