The Genetic Lottery

Anyone else see parallels between a recent New York Times article about model scouts in southern Brazil searching for the next Gisele Bundchen and a piece in the paper's magazine about a training camp that searches out and trains future soccer hopefuls as young as seven years old? What I found particularly chilling was the scientific precision with which the scouts undertake their searches—in the case of the models, scouts research the genetic makeup of small towns in Brazil's south, looking for areas with lots of German and Italian ancestry, and then hang out in schoolyards checking out the goods. But both articles bring the mainly mercenary motives of the scouts to the fore.
