Today the Jazz Institute of Chicago, which programs the Chicago Jazz Festival, announced the full schedule for this year’s event. It was already public knowledge that the city had cut down the fest from three days to two due to budget constraints, but thanks to some programming at the Chicago Cultural Center and Millennium Park on Thursday and Friday, September 2 and 3, there are four days of fine music, even though most of the national acts are booked in Grant Park on Saturday and Sunday.

Highlights include Henry Threadgill’s Zooid, the Brad Mehldau Trio, Brian Blade & the Fellowship Band (with Chicagoan Jeff Parker on guitar), the Dana Hall Quintet with guest trumpeter Nicholas Payton, and Boston’s Either/Orchestra playing a program of Ethiopian music with special guests, saxophonist Getatchew Mekurya and singer Teshome Mitiku Mahmoud Ahmed (arguably the greatest singer the country has ever produced). This year’s artist-in-residence is Chicago flute master Nicole Mitchell, who leads both her Black Earth Orchestra and her excellent new band Sonic Projections with keyboardist Craig Taborn, saxophonist David Boykin, and drummer Chad Taylor. The full lineup is on the JIC Web site.

Today's playlist:

Aki Takase & Rudi Mahall, Evergreen (Intakt)
June Christy, Something Cool (Capitol Jazz)
Kid Cudi, Man on the Moon: The End of the Day (Universal Motown)
Cosmologic, Eyes in the Back of My Head (Cuneiform)
Radu Malfatti and Klaus Filip, Imaoto (Erstwhile)
