When I first heard about this week's cover story on Sarah Kavage's Industrial Harvest project, it immediately reminded me of Anne Elizabeth Moore's Garment Work. Well, duh, it turns out. From Kavage's guest blogging on Democracy Guest List, a nice thumbnail description of one facet of the project:
At the beginning of this process: individuation, and an identity that clung to a sack of grain throughout a long chain of transactions. At the other end: pure abstraction, such that in many transactions no product is actually changing hands.
The world will not, I believe, end with either a bang or a whimper, but with a cheer. Because we will have been told it’s part of our culture now, and we will have worked really hard for it.
