Chicagoans can perhaps be forgiven for acting as though the only thing going on in the world this past weekend was Lollapalooza; the constant flood of silly posts from Grant Park clogging my Twitter feed was about enough to keep me off the service for the weekend. But running a close second to Lollapalooza were tweets from people at the Newport Jazz Festival. Granted, the Newport tweets weren’t any more illuminating, but they did at least make me jealous about the lineup.

Among the most frequent tweeters was Patrick Jarenwattananon, one of the folks who writes about jazz for NPR’s great A Blog Supreme, whose employer is putting its money where his, er, fingers were. At its website NPR has posted complete festival sets from many of the event’s most enticing performers, including Ben Allison, Matt Wilson, J.D. Allen, Dave Binney, Fly, Ken Vandermark's Powerhouse Sound, and a trio of Sun Ra reedist Marshall Allen, pianist Matthew Shipp, and bassist Joe Morris that’s currently on its way to my hard drive.

Today’s playlist:

Rene Lussier, Martin Tétreault, and Otomo Yoshihide, Élektrik Toboggan (Victo)
Terell Stafford-Dick Oatts Quintet, Bridging the Gap (Planet Arts)
Rakalam Bob Moses, Father’s Day B’hash (Sunnyside)
Phill Niblock, Touch Strings (Touch)
Various artists, Boogie Woogie Kings (Delmark)
