Pitsfield Sun, April 26, 1866. Dante could have told this kid: be selective in choosing your guide to the underground. "Concert saloons" were pretty interesting and significant places: they presaged nightclubs, clip joints, vaudeville and burlesque theaters, and along with cigar shops were one of the first places to institutionalize the hiring of smokin' hot waitresses. The latter had a certain reputation for fraternizing (sororizing?) with the all-male clientele.
