New York Courier, June 12, 1816. Throughout most of human history, infanticide was very hard to detect and rarely prosecuted. Social scientists and historians use the term "dark number" when referring to inherently obscure phenomena like this. It was pretty rare for coroners to even bother ruling on a find like this, unless it was a multiple grave of babies, in which case there would have been an investigation into a possible baby farm. If the tiny bones of neonates were found, the local physicians and midwives would probably have come under official suspicion as abortionists.
