Weekly Ohio State Journal, March 1, 1893. A "drummer" is a traveling salesman, not a musician. It was a hard buck, though maybe not as tough as the life as that of the proverbially abused and long-suffering rented mule. The word howitzer is derived from the Czech houfnice. Houf means "crowd"—the idea being that it's a weapon suited to emphatic crowd control measures.
