Birds of Avalon

The city's expansive World Music Festival (be sure to consult the Reader's critical guide), the Hyde Park Jazz Festival, and several shows written up on this week's List are all happening this weekend, but they aren't the only musical goings-on to keep in mind when making your plans.

Check out a few other recommendations after the jump:

MP Productions has been booking some quality touring acts recently at the charming Logan Square dive Ronny's (2101 N. California). Bonnie "Prince" Billy is playing a couple of sold-out shows on Tuesday, September 28, and Sic Alps and Magik Markers visit on Saturday, October 2. Friday night Cheetie Kumar and Paul Siler (formerly of the Cherry Valence) roll through town with their psych-rock outfit Birds of Avalon. The noise gets started at 8 PM with openers the Mediums and the Blamers. Also on Friday, Chicago expatriates Walter Meego return from Los Angeles to dish some electro-pop grooves at the Empty Bottle. That show begins at 10 PM.

The "secret" Deerhunter show at 560 W. Grand on Saturday at 4 PM isn't much of a secret anymore, so get there early. If Saturday is laundry day, though, and you're stuck at Bubbleland missing Bradford Cox and the boys, there's still plenty to do later in the day. Old-school British punks the Vibrators are at Reggie's Music Joint on the south side, quirk-pop nutballs Of Montreal headline the Riviera Theatre with Janelle Monae, and on the cheaper side of things, Iowa's Mondo Drag, who impressed me opening for Sleepy Sun a few months back, play the Hideout.

Daniel Snaith, better known as Caribou, comes to Metro on Sunday with ambient experimental group Emeralds, and Philadelphia's Drink Up Buttercup—this week's winner of the obnoxious-band-name sweepstakes—will bring their hooky, theatrical, and slightly demented 1960s-inspired indie pop to Subterranean that same night.
