Dinner & a Show: Wednesday 10/6 | Bleader

Show: Waiting for Superman "Distributed by Paramount, this documentary about the public education crisis isn't as smart or rigorous as Bob Bowdon's shoestring production The Cartel, which arrived in town earlier this year and quickly vanished," writes J.R. Jones. "But the new movie is still an admirable exercise in straight talk, especially in its tough assessment of the mediocrity-enforcing teachers' unions."

4:45 pm, 6:30 pm, 9:30 pm, 10:10 pm, Landmark's Century Centre, 2828 N. Clark St., 773-509-4949

Dinner: Chilam Balam BYO Mexican restaurant offering farm-to-table small plates. "The braised mushroom-and-cheese empanadas remain, pockets so light and flaky I’m at a loss to explain how they can contain the earthy fungus, braised with pipian verde and epazote. Even something as mundane as a grilled hanger steak transcends itself, plated on a lava field of guajillo sauce," writes Mike Sula.

Show: Jason Adasiewicz's Sun Rooms "Chicago vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz got his start as a drummer, and he makes it impossible to forget that the vibes are a percussion instrument—he hits harder than any vibist I've ever heard, often setting the keys ringing so vigorously that their tones buzz and distort," writes Peter Margasak. "Far from a basher, though, he's a gifted and thoughtful melodist, capable of great nuance." Sun Rooms are a trio with bassist Nate McBride and drummer Mike Reed.
