Turkey tips, a chili contest, Big Star's anniversary beer, and more.

The Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA) hosts Dining by Design, a weekend of fund-raisers that marry food with art and design. On Thursday, the party Cocktails by Design features a signature drink, DIFFA Rouge, created by mixologist-about-town Adam Seger. Saturday’s Table Hop & Taste pairs wines with food contributions from local restaurants like Province, Prosecco, and City Provisions. The gala dinner Saturday evening is mainly for "table sponsors" and their guests; individual tickets are available for $500, though, and include cocktails, dinner, dessert, and a silent auction. Attendees at the second annual Half Acre Charitable Chili Cook-Off taste the vegetarian and vegan creations of 24 contestants and give feedback alongside a panel of judges. Beer’s provided by Half Acre and dessert by Black Dog Gelato. Proceeds benefit the Arts of Life, a studio for adults with developmental disabilities. 5 PM, Arts of Life, 2010 W. At tonight’s four-course Taste of Michigan dinner, the Publican serves a menu developed after a recent weekend trip to the state by its culinary team, who sampled local produce and visited New Holland Brewing Company. Managers from Big Star teamed up with Goose Island head brewer Jared Rouben to produce Deguello, a hoppy ale with notes of pine and citrus, in celebration of the taco joint’s first anniversary (deguello was a Mexican battle cry at the Alamo, as well as the name of ZZ Top's sixth album). That beer’s tapped at the anniversary party tonight, which also features a special food menu and a performance by Jon Langford. 7 PM, Big Star, 1531 N. Damen, 773-235-4039.
