A head injury on his 30th birthday whisks a disenchanted teacher into a fantasy world in The Face You Deserve, a meditation on suspended adolescence that was the 2004 debut feature by Portuguese critic-turned-filmmaker Miguel Gomes.

Northwestern's Block Cinema, the local presenter for the first U.S. tour of Gomes's work, describes him as "an anarchic stylist fueled by the themes and narrative logic of dreams, fairy tales, and improvisational music."

The Face You Deserve screens with Gomes's 27-minute 2003 short 31, tonight at 7 p.m. at Cinema Borealis, 1550 N. Milwaukee Ave. $10 suggested donation.
