Joe Cardona & Mario de Varona follow salsa superstar Celia Cruz's 60-year career, from her teens singing in the canteens of pre-Revolutionary Havana to her work beginning in the 60s with Tito Puente, Willie Colon and Johnny Pacheco to her 2003 death, in their 2008 documentary Celia the Queen.

Along with extensive archival footage, the film includes original scenes from the last five years of Cruz's life, and new interviews with David Byrne, Quincy Jones, Andy Garcia, Wyclef Jean, and other collaborators and admirers.

Celia the Queen has its Chicago premiere as part of Latino Fashion Week, tonight at 7 p.m. at Pipers Alley, 1608 N. Wells St. Doors at 6. Tickets are $20, or $30 including post-screening reception at Suite Lounge, 1446 N. Wells.
