Yesterday the New York Times ran a story about a blogger who focuses on clothing and designers that most men just don't "get," presumably because it's more innovative or striking than obviously sexy or simply elegant. Of course it's pretty well-known (among women at least) that we often dress to impress other people who understand style—who are often other women.
Coincidentally, I had also recently come across a piece by Marie Claire blogger Maura Kelly detailing techniques for getting men to flirt (it was on the MSN home page at my day job, OK?). Her number one tip? Dressing down. "I will swear on a copy of War and Peace that I am flirted with far more often when I am dressed like a complete schlub, as opposed to when I'm dressed to the nines," she writes. "The only thing I can conclude is that men are less intimidated by casually dressed women."
There is something to this. But do you want to go out with a guy who is cowed by a lady with great style? It's like saying we should act dumb because men don't like women who are smarter than they are. Well, sometimes we are. And we tend to dress better too. Get used to it.
